The 26-year-old joined the Black Cats on loan from Rangers in January and made 21 appearances in all competitions, scoring three times and providing four assists.

Jones wasn’t playing regularly at Rangers so could be set for another move this summer, yet a return to Wearside appears unlikely.

The Northern Ireland international has posted the following message: “Good luck to @SunderlandAFC for the future. A massive club which I loved playing for. Thank you for the opportunity and a big thank you to the fans for all the love and support since I arrived. I look forward to seeing the club where it belongs in the future. Thankyou.”

Jones’ best performance in a Sunderland shirt came during a 2-0 win against Portsmouth, where he scored and provided an assist at Fratton Park.
