Sunderland’s search for a new head coach continues, with supporters facing an increasingly long wait to discover who’ll be tasked with bringing the team back into the top half of the table and beyond next season.
But planning for that campaign is already well under way, with the club’s way of operating meaning that the recruitment wheels are already starting to turn. Already, they’ve been linked with a significant number of big deals, both incomings and outgoings. So what’s the latest and how likely is it that any of them will actually happen? 17. JOSH MURPHY
Recaptured his best form at Oxford United, scoring a brace at Wembley in the play-off final to send them into the Championship. Sunderland were always going to be monitoring left wingers this summer in case Jack Clarke leaves, but equally it's not likely they'll move while he remains at the club. As such, they ultimately weren't big players in this race and Murphy has subsequently signed a long-term deal to join Portsmouth. 18. JACK CLARKE
Talks over a new deal have shown little signs of coming to a positive resolution and so with two years on his current contract, the widespread expectation is that it’s the right time for Clarke and Sunderland to move on. Clarke should now be able to go into a good Premier League side as a near-certain starter and his contract has long enough to run that Sunderland should recoup a big fee if he does go. The caveat is that Sunderland's valuation is huge, as they know that him staying for another year has the potential to be a game changer for their promotion prospects. That valuation could yet put off interested clubs so while he is expected to leave, it's anything but a certainty. 19. LIAM MILLAR
Had a really strong season on loan at Preston on the left flank, and Sunderland are known to have an interest as they look to add quality in the attacking third as well as Championship experience. . Basel are likely to be open to cashing in this summer while his stock is high as a result of his Preston success. Preston would like him back but it's Sheffield United who are believed to have in the driving seat up until this point. 20. NAZARIY RUSYN
Rusyn was linked with a potential return to Ukraine after a difficult first season on Wearside but has publicly confirmed to media outlets in his home country that he is happy at the club and planning to fight for his place. Over his recent calf issues and fully fit for the start of pre-season.
