Whether it is that Jack Rodwell was actually a good player deep down or that Will Grigg was a smart signing on paper, most Sunderland fans will have at least one controversial take on the club they love.
On social media, The Echo asked Black Cats supporters for their best unpopular Sunderland opinions – here, we take a look at the results:
5. Lynden Gooch - overrated
Tom Cole on Twitter said: "Lynden Gooch wasn't actually as good as some people thought he was..." Photo: George Wood
6. Amad - benchwarmer
Josh on Twitter was quick to point out that he thought that Amad Diallio wouldn't make Sunderland's current starting XI should he re-join the club in January! Similarly, Aaron added: "Hate to be negative but just getting Amad back won't be enough to get us promoted remember last year we had this exact same starting 11 and it didn't work so what makes anyone think that it'll work the next season nothings changed apart from our bench that's improved massively." 7. Will Grigg - logical signing
Den Kendal provided his unpopular Sunderland opinion on social media: "We relied on Aiden McGeady for far too long and Will Grigg was a perfectly logical signing but turned into a disaster." Photo: Nathan Stirk
8. Didier Ndong - good
Ethan Zombek stated that the Sunderland transfer flop was indeed a "good" player during his stint with the Black Cats despite the midfielder suffering two relegations with the club and eventually being dismissed. Photo: SCOTT HEPPELL
