Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray has said the club are prepared to add more experience to the squad if they feel it is necessary, while their recent model has been focused on investing in young talent.
One of the main priorities for Sunderland will be to strengthen their striker options, while the club were also trying to sign another holding midfielder in the summer.
We asked fans on our social media platforms to name a realistic signing they think Sunderland could make in January.
Here are some of the names which were mentioned:

9. Will Keane (Wigan)
With Wigan in the relegation zone following the sacking of former boss Leam Richardson, there may be clubs looking at some of The Latics’ best assets. Keane, 29, has scored seven league goals despite his side’s struggles this campaign. Photo: George Wood

10. Cameron Archer (Aston Villa)
Several Championship clubs, including Sunderland, have been linked with a loan move for the Aston Villa striker. After making just six Premier League appearances for Villa in the first half of the campaign, it looks like the 20-year-old needs more regular game time. Photo: Justin Setterfield

11. Jonson Clarke-Harris (Peterborough)
Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony has said former boss Lee Johnson wanted to sign Clarke-Harris. Following Posh’s return to League One, the 28-year-old striker has scored 12 league goals this season. Photo: David Rogers

12. Jerry Yates (Blackpool)
Blackpool are another club in the Championship relegation zone, yet Yates has provided a goal source by scoring nine times in 21 league appearances. Photo: Shaun Botterill
