With big fees predominantly out the window, clubs are having to become creative in their attempts to add to their ranks – leading to some interesting pieces of business thus far.
Here, we take a look at some of the deals which have caught the eye already in the third tier, and how some of Sunderland’s key rivals are shaping-up ahead of the new campaign:
9. LIAM BRIDCUTT - LINCOLN CITY
A team to watch out for this season, now that Michael Appleton has had time to better introduce what is a fairly significant change of direction from the Danny Cowley era. Unsurprisingly given his past record at Oxford United, he is looking to bring in young and athletic players and the signing of Jamie Jones from Crewe looks a canny one given there were other suitors in that division. The experience and composure of Bridcutt will therefore be all the more important. Even in a struggling Bolton side last season, his class stood out. Photo: PAUL ELLIS
10. RICHARD KEOGH - MK DONS
MK Dons found themselves in a relegation scrap for much of last season, but their form did improve after the appointment of Russell Martin. Martin favoured a very patient, heavily possession based form of football and so Keogh, vastly experienced and used to the style from a long association with Derby County, looks a very savvy addition. The key question, clearly, is how his fitness will hold up given such a long spell on the sidelines. Photo: Lewis Storey
11. CALLUM CAMPS - FLEETWOOD TOWN
Perhaps a case of saving the best until last. Camps is a midfielder with real quality and end product, who should settle very easily into a side that create a lot of chances and play some good football. Camps has served a long apprenticeship at Rochdale and looks more than ready to take the next step. Photo: LINDSEY PARNABY
