There has been plenty of talk over the past few weeks ahead of the Black Cats’ fourth straight season in the third tier.

Indeed, new Portsmouth chief executive Andy Cullen insists Pompey will be competitive and can come out on top this season against their League One promotion rivals.

And Sunderland’s divisional rivals Doncaster Rovers have announced an increased playing budget for next season – despite debts of more than £1million.

There was also speculation that Wolves had made a key transfer decision amid Dion Sanderson rumours whilst Sunderland’s striker swoop took another twist.

Portsmouth want Manchester City goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu on loan this summer, (Sun on Sunday)

Celtic’s talks with Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke are progressing well. Championship sides Cardiff City, Nottingham Forest and Millwall all held initial talks with the free-scoring forward. However, reports have suggested he is ‘very keen’ to join Celtic. (Football Insider)

Gillingham are poised to sign goalkeeper Ryan Allsop on a free transfer. (Sun on Sunday)

Luton Town boss Nathan Jones ‘is bidding’ for Morecambe’s Carlos Mendes Gomes but ‘will have to find £500,000’. The attacker has been linked with Sunderland but has just signed a new deal at Morecambe. Mendes Gomes has also been linked with Barnsley, Hull City, Sunderland and Rangers. (Sun on Sunday)
