Who stood out for Sunderland at Barnsley?

In what was always going to be a closely-fought game between two of the promotion rivals, the two sides shared the spoils following an evenly-matched 90 minutes. And our Sunderland AFC writer Phil Smith has now offered his verdict on the individual performances of Sunderland's starts - with defensive players catching the eye. Scroll down and click through the pages to see who shone - and struggled - for the Black Cats at Barnsley:

An awful night to be a goalkeeper. Kicking understandably erratic in the conditions but still produced some big saves. 7
His toughest night as a right-back yet. Got away with a couple of very poor backpasses and struggled to contain Thiam. 5
Did well, with the usually threatening Cauley Woodrow fairly quiet. Good in the air and kept it simple. 7
Superb on his return to the side. Should have had an assist for a fine through ball and defensively did brilliantly throughout. 8
Just about came through a challenging first half unscathed. Had little problems in the second. 6
Effectiveness was reduced after taking a yellow in the early stages of the game. Some good set pieces but not his usual threat. 5

Made some key blocks all the way through the game. Came close to scoring in the second half after a good late run into the box but was denied by the opposition defence. 6
Missed a big chance to put Sunderland ahead early in the second half. Did OK after being asked to play a more advanced role. Battled hard. 6
Got into some good areas, particularly in the second half, but final ball was very poor. 5
Never quite able to get into the game as much as he would have liked, with his biggest contributions were arguably when tracking back. 6
Badly isolated in the first half, with the brutal wind a big factor. Better in the second, but with no sight of goal. 5
Ineffectual, never getting the ball in the final third where he is capable of hurting sides. 6
Didnt get a kick after coming on in stoppage time. N/A
