Peterlee Sunday League: New Hesledon the home-town heroes in derby final clash

Murton New Hesledon lifted the Second Division League Cup with a hard-fought final victory over Seaham Marlborough.

Watched by a crowd of more than 300 at at Murton Welfare last Friday, the staying power of New Hesledon saw them come out on top in an action-packed clash with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Liam Appleby and star man Gavin Hoggarth.

Dan Cahill shone in vain for Marlborough.

Both sides are still fighting it out for promotion.

Dawdon Welfare Park were far too strong for Horden Cricket Club as they cruised into the John & Pat McManus Memorial Cup semi-finals with a 12-1 win.

Six-goal Robbie Bird led the way, backed by goals from Paul Atherton (2), Jack Walker, Tom Price, Andrew Beer, and sub Wes Smith.

Shotton Builders Warehouse were run ragged by Premier side Horden CW Supporters Club in their Tommy Burrell Memorial Cup semi-final and went down 4-1.

Bob Taylor, John Williams, Scott Davidson and Jonathan Monaghan sent Supporters into the final against Easington Lane WMC or Dawdon Welfare Park.

Star man Bradley Beeston netted Shotton’s consolation. Craig Harbord shone for Horden.

Easington CIU look safe from Premier Division relegation after edging a vital 3-2 win over bottom club Thornley Harrys Bar, who have it all to do now to avoid the drop.

Stephen Briggs, Thomas Goundry and Graham Hornsby gave CIU all three points , despite replies from Lee Westgarth and John-Ross Thubron. Chris Hall starred for CIU, Harrison Hancock for Thornley.

Carl Thomas’s brace and an effort from substitute Stephen Turner steered Murton Park View home 3-0 at lowly Easington Lane WMC.

Jordan Vout starred for Murton, Jordon Garside for Lane.

Peterlee Helford United beat Seaham The George 3-0 thanks to Keith Bailey (2) and Peter Crawford, with Gary Shaw starring.

In midweek, leaders Dawdon Welfare Park outgunned Easington CIU 5-1. Robbie Bird (3) and Kyle Bell (2) struck, with Andrew Beer star man. Rob Huntley hit CIU’s reply, with Graham Hornsby their top performer.

In the Second Division, Murton New Hesledon could not build on their cup final success, losing 3-2 to promotion rivals Wingate Plough Inn.

Dave Cummings, Jordan Devine and Jake Devine helped Plough home, with Anthony Cook bagging both replies. Nathan Grainger starred for Plough.

Two Chris Collings goals were not enough to salvage anything for Acre Rigg SC, who lost 4-2 to leaders NSCC.

Mark Ewart starred for the New Seaham side, whose marksmen were Martin Hall (2), Anthony Watson and Michael Kennedy.

Anthony Cairns fired a consolation for Peterlee Central Club, who were thumped 7-1 by Peterlee Oaklands. Ashley Wilkinson was Central’s top man.

Jared Jones and Dave Kember netted for Peterlee Hearts, but Hetton Fox and Hounds ran out 3-2 winners, with Scott Taylor, sub Dan Robson and Matthew Price on target. Keeper Arron Watson was Fox’s star man.

Brennan Yuill (2) and James Brett struck in vain for New Seaham Mallard, who lost 4-3 at Haswell Oddfellows Arms. Callum Drakesmith shone for Mallard.

In Division One, Easington Southside maintained their promotion surge when goals from Darren Massam, Mark Walker and Ken Pounder helped seal a 3-1 win at Hetton Social. Nathan Fannan notched for Hetton, whose top man was Gary Medd.

Easington Welfare’s promotion bid suffered a setback with a 3-2 loss to much-improved Peterlee Catholic.

Ross Stephenson, Paul Wintrip and sub Liam Wintrip did the damage, with Josh Lincoln and Lewis Miller netting for Welfare, whose star man was Darren Major.
