Joe Willock claimed a point from a 1-1 draw with a 95th-minute equaliser after Callum Wilson had had an injury-time strike controversially ruled out for handball by VAR.

Dwight Gayle – who set up Willock’s goal – had replaced Almiron in the 85th minute, and Steve Bruce revealed after the game why Almiron had to leave the field as Newcastle pushed for an equaliser against the Premier League champions, who had taken a third-minute lead through a strike from Mohamed Salah.

“We hope it’s cramp with Almiron,” said United’s head coach.

Allan Saint-Maximin – who unsettled Liverpool with a series of powerful runs forward – needed treatment during the game, but he was able to play the full game. Bruce said: “Saint-Maximin’s going to take knocks because of the way he plays. I think he’s OK.”
