Steve Bruce had resisted the temptation to bring him back for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Newport County, but the winger is set to face Burnley at St James’s Park tomorrow night.

“Allan looks as if he could be fit – he’s trained all week,” said Bruce. “We decided not to risk him against Newport, but we hope he’s well and has got over his ankle injury.”

Bruce, however, has other injury concerns, and United’s head coach said: “Jamaal (Lascelles) and Emil Krafth are a bit of a problem. We’ll see how there are today. They are my concerns. Fab Schar’s OK. He played (against Newport), and is ahead of schedule, but, defensively, we’re still a bit light with (Paul) Dummett and (Ciaran) Clark out, and Jamaal and Krafth now thrown into the mix too.”
