Anderson was an unused substitute for the Premier League game against Arsenal at St James’s Park last weekend – and Steve Bruce revealed after the game that the teenager could get more minutes on the pitch before the end of the season.

However, the 18-year-old – who was promoted to the first-team squad early in the season – has been sidelined with a hip problem.

“Unfortunately, he’s picked up a knock in the last game he played,” said United head coach Bruce. “That’s set him back a bit. It’s a hip problem. He’s got a big future. He’ll be struggling for the next couple of weeks, I’d have thought.”

Anderson made his senior debut in January when he came off the bench in an FA Cup tie against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The England Under-19 international signed a professional deal in November.
