Season-ticket refunds on the agenda at Newcastle United

Newcastle United season-ticket holders were already out of pocket this season before the Premier League revealed its plan to charge for pay-per-view games.

Fans have already paid for two home games they have not been able to attend due to the coronavirus pandemic, which led to top-flight games going behind closed doors in March.

They will be refunded on a pro-rata basis for games, but the club, which had hoped to be welcoming some supporters back into St James’s Park this month, is yet to reveal how and when they will be repaid.

And fans, understandably, want to know when the club will start the process of issuing refunds for Premier League fixtures they have not been able to attend.

There were discussions with fan groups earlier this season when plans were being made for the return of at east 10,000 socially-distanced supporters to games. The issue of refunds was also discussed.

The Government has since delayed the return of fans following a rise in infections across the country – and there is no timetable, at present, for an end to behind-closed-doors football.

Newcastle have made no comment, but the Gazette understands that the issue is being discussed behind the scenes as the club waits on further guidance from the Government, which this week put the North East in its “high” second tier for coronavirus restrictions.

The club hopes to issue an update soon.
