The 21-year-old will primarily, at least, be used by the Magpies’ under-23 side under the guidance of Chris Hogg, with the hope he will progress to first-team level in years to come, potentially after a continental loan spell.

While happy for the former Deportivo Municipal No10, Gareca is cautious about the youngster making the move to the Premier League so soon in his career.

And he wants Newcastle United to not forget about the development of the player, just because they paid such a low fee, thought to be in the region of £200,000.

Speaking before his side’s World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Brazil, Argentine coach Gareca said of the transfer: “It is good for the boy.

"We wish him all the best. If I analyse how much the player was sold for, I don't like it. I would expect a Peruvian player to cost much more. We need to be able to strengthen our market.

"We are talking about very powerful countries. Sometimes when the investment is low, the interest (in the player) is also low.

"I want him to go to a club and not be treading water. I prefer a consolidation in the (Peruvian) first division. He has already been summoned to the National Team and a Peru player should be valued.

"But it is only an opinion and we must continue to observe him."

After signing the player, Hogg, United’s lead player development coach for the under-23s said: “We're delighted to have Rodrigo here. He's an exciting attacking player, and we'll be hoping to see that attacking ability.

"We'll be looking to give him the opportunity to improve with us and be a part of Newcastle United's future."

Vilca himself added: “I am very happy and I hope to have a long and successful time in Newcastle.

"It seems a very nice city. I hope to train as soon as possible now. I don't want to lose time – I want to be ready!".
