That’s according to the Daily Star, who claims the Magpies head coach will likely be forced into targeting free transfer and loans this summer with just £12m made available to spend.
That could put pressure on Bruce to generate further funds through player sales. Saint-Maximin is comfortably the club’s biggest asset, however will only be sold if an astronomical bid arrives.
Bruce is keen to sign Joe Willock permanently from Arsenal following his record-breaking loan spell, while an £8m move Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer continues to be discussed.
Long-term Toon target close to Premier League move
Long-term Newcastle target Boubakary Soumare is set to complete a summer move to Premier League rivals Leicester City.
The 22-year-old turned down the chance to join Bruce’s side in January last year, despite United agreeing a £35m deal with Lille.
Eighteen months on, after lifting the Ligue 1 title with the French club, Soumare’s switch to England is imminent.
