Steve Bruce’s men saw off Barnsley 2-1 at the club’s Benton training base, making it two wins out of two this summer for United.

And Murphy, back from a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday, was felled in the area before picking himself up to slot home the second half winner from the spot. Marcel Ritzmaier netted for the Tykes.

Jeff Hendrick made his debut in black and white, playing the opening hour, while Andy Carroll scored the opener – which was his second goal in two games after scoring against Crewe Alexandra in midweek.
