And the total today stands at £100,434 just over two months after the scheme’s launch.

Former Newcastle defender Warren Barton one of four “guardians” appointed to oversee the fund, said: “For ordinary fans to raise over £100,000 in such a short space of time is astonishing, but Newcastle United fans have never been ordinary.

“The love they have for their club, and the devotion they display to their team, is second to none, so when I was approached to get involved with the 1892 Pledge, I just had to say yes.

“However, even I was surprised at the speed at which the Pledge has taken off, and how much money has already been raised.

“When you consider the current economic climate, not just in the North East but around the world, and the fact that fans haven’t been able to go to games for over a year, it is amazing to think that the fund has already hit six figures.”

Supporters can make one-off donations and regular payments on the 1892 Pledge website. If a new owner does not want to sell part of the club to fans, the money will be donated to North East charities.

Meanwhile, Ashley is attempting to resurrect a proposed £300million sale of the club to a consortium backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund through an arbitration process.
