A Saudi Arabian-backed bid is currently progressing through Premier League checks, with Mike Ashley’s reign at St James's Park close to an end.

But the deal, which would also see Amanda Staveley and the Reuben Brothers take a share in Newcastle United, is still yet to be signed-off.

And speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the clash with Sheffield United, Bruce admits that the constant speculation has proved a distraction.

“Well you can't deny it's a distraction, but you can't use that as an excuse,” he said.

“All I can do is focus my staff and prepare the players the best they can.

“Obviously the quicker there's a decision the better for everyone. It's not great, let's be honest, but let's get on with the job at hand and do the best we can.”
