Newcastle United Championship hero eyed for second tier return in January transfer window
Gayle could be drafted into action this weekend as Magpies boss Steve Bruce looks to add a spark to his side’s Premier League season, which has seen the strikers contribute just one goal in the top flight.
But should be thrown in against Manchester City it would be 29-year-old Gayle’s first start of the season, his first for Newcastle since May 2018.
And due to his inactivity at St James’s Park, a number of Championship clubs are eyeing a January move for the striker, who netted 24 goals for West Brom in the second tier last season.West Brom are keen to bring Gayle back to boost their promotion hopes, but so too are Forest, who currently sit fourth in the Championship standings, five points off the automatic spots with a game in hand.
According to Football League World, ‘Forest have their sights set firmly on signing Gayle’ in the winter window.
After the loss at Aston Villa, Bruce discussed his side’s goalscoring issues, and the United front three. He said: “We can see they’re a threat but, of course, the one thing you need to remain confident, as a forward, is to score. We have to keep persevering.”
On Gayle, Bruce said recently: “I always believe that if you're a goalscorer, you're a goalscorer. We know the Premier League is a step up, but I saw him play for West Brom last season and he was electric. He was easily the best striker in the division.”
