The Netherlands international defender was a revelation for United in a six-month loan spell before injury cruelly cut his Eintracht Frankfurt loan short.

And in a Twitter chat with his followers the 26-year-old – who is targeting a July return from a serious knee injury – admits he is keen to come back to St James’s Park, if the club still want him.

“Everyone wants or hopes that I come back or sign a permanently deal at NUFC but I think its more a question for the club if they want me back,” said Willems.

And when asked what he wanted by one fan, he replied: “To sign and play for NUFC.”

United had an option to sign Willems permanently for around £11million in the summer, but by cutting the deal short it is not clear if this can still be activated.
