The Newcastle United striker has made three appearances off the bench since recovering from the hamstring injury he suffered in February.

However, Steve Bruce believes that Wilson – who had an injury-time goal controversially ruled out following a VAR check in last weekend's 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Anfield – is ready to start the 16th-placed club’s next Premier League fixture.

“Yeah, I think the time is right,” said United’s head coach. “We’ve been patient with him, but I felt last week against Liverpool, in the last five minutes when he burst through, Callum him being free from it. When you rely so much on your pace like he does, then you’re always a bit reluctant to get him to full speed.

"But, certainly, last week against Liverpool, I saw him up to top speed, which is good for everybody. Let’s hope he is 100%, which we think he is.”
