Saturday’s game could also mark the comeback of Saint-Maximin, who has been absent from the Toon Army’s squad since the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at the end of the November.

The winger has been sidelined for an extended period as he recovered from the after effects of a battle with Covid-19, but Bruce has suggested that he will be involved against the Villans in some capacity.

Reacting to the news on Sky Sports’ Football Show, former Villa defender Joleon Lescott said: “The nature of Newcastle is to stay in the league. They look like they're going to do that again this season under his [Bruce’s] guidance.

“The form and the recent performances coincide with Saint-Maximin not being available.
