The Magpies are currently two points clear of the relegation places with 10 games left to play, and but had to rely on a late Jamaal Lascelles header to salvage a valuable 1-1 draw against Aston Villa at St. James’ Park on Friday night.

In light of his last gasp contribution, Crooks saw fit to include the Toon skipper in his team of the week, but the pundit still expressed his concern about the Magpies’ lack of attacking threat.

Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: “This was a game where Newcastle had most of the play but couldn't finish.

"In the end it took the captain, Jamaal Lascelles, to produce a brilliant header to provide Newcastle and Steve Bruce with a reprieve.

“The Magpies are in a relegation battle and the manager is fighting to retain his job.

"If they want to survive then they have to get Allan Saint-Maximin, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron all fit and back on the pitch pronto.

“Fulham, Newcastle or Brighton are in great danger of joining my relegation certainties, Sheffield United and West Brom, in the Championship next season.

"The problem is I can't call it.”

Newcastle’s next game is a relegation six-pointer against fellow strugglers Brighton on Saturday night.

The Seagulls picked up a crucial 2-1 win over Southampton on Sunday afternoon to move three points clear of the drop zone.
