Ex-Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford discusses his Newcastle United rivalry ahead of Merseyside derby

Former Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford admits he ‘gets it’ when it comes to the Merseyside derby, as he grew up on one side of the great Tyne-Wear divide.

Dyed in the wool Mackem Pickford, now of Everton, heads into tonight's Premier League encounter with Liverpool looking to help turn the Toffees’ faltering campaign around.

And coming from Washington, and of red and white persuasion, Pickford knows exactly what these kind of games mean.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: “We just need to start getting that momentum going and getting those results.

“We know the passion for both sides and with me being from up north I know what the passion's like with Sunderland and Newcastle.

“I think it's the same down here so I kind of know the feeling but you've got to give credit where credit's due. They are doing really well but it's hopefully our time to stop them in their tracks.”
