Ex-Sunderland hero Michael Gray slams Newcastle United attacking approach under Steve Bruce raising relegation concerns

Gray believes United’s want to play more attacking football must be tempered with the reality of their current predicament – which revolves around primarily remaining a Premier League outfit.

And commentator Gray, speaking to TalkSPORT, thinks Geordies must work out what they want – stay up or play entertaining football and fail, as he believes they did ultimately under Keegan in the 1990s.

“They've all been complaining they want entertaining football – they got that. Well, you lost, 4-3” said Gray.

“Steve Bruce is now manager of the month, he has done what he said he had to do on the side of the tin – keep your side up.

“That is the football Newcastle fans want to see, lose by the odd goal. Do that every week and you would have got relegated.

“What do you want? A defensive team that will keep you in the Premier League? Do you want Steve Bruce in charge? Do you want to score loads of goals and lose like you used to do in the big games when Kevin Keegan was there?

“Their main goal is to stay in the Premier League.”

Bruce’s side are safe in the Premier League and secured their place in next season’s competition with an entertaining 4-2 win over Leicester City last weekend.

Despite goals from Emil Krafth, Joelinton and Joe Willock the Magpies were beaten by Pep Guardiola’s men at St James’ Park last night.
