According to the Northern Echo, United are monitoring the situation of the defensive pair, despite Bruce playing down the chances of the Magpies doing a January deal.

The report states Bruce “has held a number of discussions with the rest of his recruitment team and is keen to bring in two or three players if possible”.

Holgate is rated in the £14million bracket by Everton, although there is understood to be a reluctance to let the 23-year-old leave, given the Toffees’ lack of central defensive cover.

Bruce is thought to be a fan of Holgate’s versatility, with the player able to play on the right, centre or defensive midfield.

Meanwhile, Gibson is a player who remains on United’s radar with the former full-back's Goodison Park deal set to run out in the summer.
