The 25-year-old is reportedly close to joining on an initial loan move with a view to a permanent deal. The stopper is out of contract next summer and is not thought to be in Magpies boss Eddie Howe’s plans.

Woodman started last season as first choice with Martin Dubrava and Karl Darlow recovering from surgery and illness. However, Woodman spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Bournemouth but only made one appearance in the FA Cup.

Woodman now looks set to join Preston North End in the Championship, however, and could play against Sunderland next season should he make the move to Deepdale.

Woodman’s potential arrival at Preston could signal a boost in Sunderland’s chances of securing their own goalkeeper target. The Lilywhites had been linked with re-signing Leicester City shot-stopper Daniel Iversen.

The 24-year-old spent the past two seasons on loan in the Championship at Preston and the club’s player of the season award last campaign. The Sun recently stated that Alex Neil’s former club are reportedly keen on bringing Iverson back to Deepdale for a third season, with Sunderland also interested.

Woodman’s arrival could mean Preston’s interest in Iverson comes to an end in a potential boost to Sunderland’s chances of signing the Danmark youth international. Middlesbrough have also been credited with an interest.

Iversen has been on the books at Leicester City since 2018-19 but hasn’t made a single appearance for the Foxes in the league or cups.
