The Heed rounded off their preparations for the new National League North season with a 4-1 defeat against Hartlepool United.

A number of trialists have appeared for Mike Williamson’s side during pre-season including former Leeds United midfielder Romario Vieira and striker Lewis McNall, who spent time on loan at Gateshead during his time at Newcastle United.

Former Heed James Montgomery also appeared as a trialist in the defeat against Pools as Williamson continues to assess his squad ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup second qualifying round tie at Chorley.

Watson revealed that the club will not be rushed into adding to their ranks – and will only make a move if they are convinced the new additions are right for their squad.

He told The Echo: “We are really happy with the group that we have got.

“We have kept the group together and there is room for one or two more players.

“We aren’t bending over backwards but if one or two that fit our philosophy become available, then we will have room for them.

“The lads have been brilliant, maybe one or two will come in but they have to be the right characters because that is what the dressing room has been built on.

“We have a few options; we’ve had a look at lads in pre-season and we might act on them if we feel they are the right players to add to what we already have at the club.”

Gateshead get their league season underway next Monday when they travel to Bradford (Park Avenue).
