He went on to have spells with Scarborough and Scunthorpe United, before scoring in Whitby Town’s FA Vase Final win over North Ferriby United at Wembley in 1997.

He has managerial experience with the likes of Guisborough Town and Seaham Red Star and will take the lead role in the dugout at Heritage Park after he was chosen to succeed four-time FA Vase winner Ian Chandler.

Toman will be assisted by former Hartlepool United defender McGuckin, who made 152 appearances for the club before joining Fulham for a six-figure fee in August 1997.

He returned to Victoria Park on loan before ending his playing career with spells at Oxford United and Barrow and has spent time coaching with young players at Middlesbrough, East Durham Colleges and back at Hartlepool.

After confirming the appointment, Bishop Auckland chairman Steve Coulthard explained: “I am delighted for Andy to join Bishop Auckland as manager as I have personally known him for over 30 years, having played against him and as a FA mentor for Durham FA.

“He has always been interested in the job, and has left his job in Norway to join us over here in our time of need and himself and Ian will bring a wealth of experience and stability to the club I am sure."

He added: “Andy is very keen to work with our reserve side as well as our under-18s and other 20 junior teams we are attached to.

“Can I thank all the other people who expressed an interest in the job and wish them all good luck,” he added.

Meanwhile, Toman and McGuckin will take charge of the Two-Blues for the first time on Saturday as they go looking for their first league win of the season at promotion contenders Shildon.
