Dutch midfielder Bruinenberg relishing Sunderland challenge

New signing Dominique Bruinenberg is looking forward to taking another step towards her full Sunderland Ladies debut.

The midfielder, who joined the Lady Black Cats last month, will play in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Scottish side Spartans on Sunday.

Dutch midfielder Bruinenberg joined the club from from Verona in Serie A in a double Sunderland transfer move, with German keeper Anke Preuss moving from Frankfurt.

The Wearsiders, who this week parted company with head coach Carlton Fairweather, are building towards the start of their competitive fixtures.

Sunderland host Aston Villa in the fifth round of the Women’s FA Cup on Sunday, March 21, and kick off the WSL1 Spring Series at Birmingham on Sunday, April 23.

Bruinenberg, who has international experience for the Netherlands up to U19 level, said: “I am settling in, it is going good.

“It feels like home already, the girls are really nice and the people at the club are really nice.

“The facilities at the club are amazing. Compared to the Netherlands and Italy, this is way more professional.

“I’m full-time at Sunderland, but I couldn’t do that in the Netherlands. This is totally different, it’s perfect.

“I train during the day at the Academy of Light and train with all my team-mates on the evening.”

Bruinenberg can’t wait for the real thing to start.

“I’m looking forward to see where I stand as a player and us as a team compared to the other sides,” said the 24-year-old.

“I’m excited for the Spring Series.”
