Chairman excited by Birtley Town merger with Alliance side St Joseph's

Although Birtley Town are fighting a relegation battle in the Ebac Northern League Second Division, the club has a bright future, according to chairman Trevor Armstrong who this week announced a merger with Birtley St Joseph's.

“We’ll still be known as Birtley Town and hopefully retain our place in the Northern League,” said Armstrong.

“The merger between our ENL side and St Joseph’s, who play in the First Division of the Northern Alliance, will offer a firmer structure to develop the game both on and off the field.

“This will allow us to develop a more cohesive approach to the progression of young players, which can only be for the good of the local area.

“Everyone connected with both clubs is excited at the opportunities which the link-up will offer and I’m sure the future for football in Birtley is intact.”

Recently, there have been changes at Birtley Town who will be striving for points in the bottom-five clash at home to Crook Town on Saturday.

Stalwart John Heslington has stepped down as chairman, while manager Tony Boakes and assistant Jackie Trainor have moved to Crook. Former coach Martin Hall is now in charge of team affairs.

Morpeth Town will try again to stage their FA Vase fourth round tie at home to North Shields on Saturday.

The match was again postponed last night, with Craik Park still waterlogged. The eventual winners will face Berkhamsted.
