Burnicle at the double to send Durham City crashing out of County Cup

The opener came after 24 minutes with a close-range Burnicle shot and he slotted home neatly past keeper Daniel Gladstone to make it 2-0.

Stephen Richardson made the game safe, netting with seven minutes remaining after a bad defensive mistake.

Jarrow Roofing and Willington played out an entertaining 2-2 draw, before the hosts won 5-4 on penalties.

Michael Mackay gave Roofing the lead after just 14 minutes with a neat header past keeper Stephen Robinson from Calvin Smith’s cross.

Willington then scored two goals in 10 minutes to stun their First Division hosts, the first a Reece Brown shot from 20 yards after 21 minutes and the second from Jason White when he broke clear and fired in past Andrew Jennison from fully 30 yards.

With 10 minutes to go, the home side equalised through Shaun Johnstone, who fired home from close range after Mackay’s shot was blocked. It was the perfect way to mark his return to the Boldon-based club.

In the penalty shoot-out, Jarrow came out on top winning 5-4 to go through to the next round.

Paul Chow, Mackay, Smith, Williamson and Shaun Vipond scored all five of the Roofing’s penalty, while Jennison denied Brown for the visitors.

In tonight’s ties, Washington look to keep up their improved run at home to Chester-le-Street, while Seaham Red Star visit Second Division strugglers Esh Winning and South Shields head to Norton and Stockton Ancients.

Sunderland RCA face a difficult tie at high-flying Second Division club Billingham Synthonia, while Shildon should be too strong for Second Division visitors Ryton & Crawcrook Albion.

Last night’s scheduled TWR Bifolds Wearside League match, between Seaham Red Star Reserves and Prudhoe Town, did not go ahead due to a power failure. Four games are on tonight, including Ashbrooke Belford House at home to Sunderland West End.
