The Black Cats had held talks with Everton over a return for the Welsh striker and were thought to be favourites for the deal.

The Latics were promoted as champions of League One last season as Broadhead scored 13 goals in all competitions whilst on loan at Sunderland, with the Wearsiders gaining entry to the Championship through the play-offs.

However, Wigan Athletic have won the race to sign the 24-year-old on loan with the move now announced on social media – and fans have been quick to react on social media:

@LauraJ8338: “Bottle job move IMO. Lacks ambition and Simms is just as good. Hope he does well loved him here last season. Would have loved him back but there ya go.”

@returnoflemack: “Tbf he's not gonna play ahead of Simms or Stewart... Maybe he knows this!”

@tenchylad: “Disappointed by that. But guess it's down to minutes on the pitch and the way Stewart and Simms played where would he play?”

@RokerEndDweller: “As long as we get the four we need in it’s not the end of the world. 24, one good half season to his career in league one. Versatile but injury prone. Shame but little to be upset about IMO.”

@mje_88: “Brilliant signing for Wigan. Disappointed not to get him but he’d of had a lot of competition for minutes and our two strikers at the minute are both better than him. Although his goal return for Sunderland speaks for it self after his knock backs and many appearances as sub.”

@straydog73: “Thanks for your goals last season Nathan Broadhead and all the best with your new club.”

@horlj_: “Good signing for Wigan providing he can actually stay fit for longer than 20 seconds. As soon as Simms signed he’d have been looking at 3rd choice here.”

@jamesSAFCmoore: “Always felt in the minority when people were clamming for him to sign, injury prone at a young age is a worry, really need an experienced forward, hope he does well though, all the best to the lad.”
