Teacher training programme in the North East – learn on the job and develop your skills in the classroom

Teach First, a national charity which develops and supports teachers and leaders, runs the School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT) programme – a one-year course where skills are learned and developed in the classroom.
It is perfect for those who want to learn “on the job”, making a difference to their community from day one. Trainees interact with pupils every day as part of the teaching staff at a school local to you.
Practical experience is at the heart of the research-led programme, as well as subject-specific training to give a deep understanding of effective teaching methods.
Apply today and be in the classroom from September 2025 with the support of a trained mentor. At the end of our programme, you will be awarded qualified teacher status (QTS) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

Ryan’s story
Ryan Gooch, 21, teaches biology, at St Bede’s & Byron in Peterlee
What were you doing before you applied for the SCITT?
I recently graduated from Sunderland University with a BSC in Sport and Exercise Science. Before that I was on a scholarship at Sunderland AFC Academy until I was 18, I was hoping to be a professional footballer but unfortunately sustained an injury.
Why did you apply to do the BCCET SCITT?
I did my University placement at St. Bede and Byron Catholic School and Sixth Form, my former school. My placement was in the PE department and I worked with my old PE teacher who suggested teaching as a possible career. I successfully applied for TA roles at the school via an agency and it was while doing this role and chatting to colleagues I found out about the Trust SCITT programme. It is a great programme and I thought it would be the best option for me to access a career in teaching.

How are you feeling about your SCITT? What are you expecting? What are you enjoying?
Yes it is, what I expected. I knew initially I would need to build up my knowledge about teaching practice and it would provide a great introduction to teaching. I can work at my own pace and have excellent training and support provided has given me the confidence to undertake the weekly hours of teaching needed.I am teaching science and my specialism is biology.
How is the support from the Trust – what advantages were there in being part of the Trust?
The support given is amazing, Suzanne (Director of Teacher Development) is always available if you need anything. It is reassuring to know I can reach out for support or guidance at any time. The Trust has lots of schools and this made me feel confident that I would find a role. It is great that the Trust train teachers so they can retain the talent they create.
What would your advice be to anyone thinking of applying for our SCITT?
It is definitely worth it, from my very first day I have not looked back. I have had nothing but positive experiences since I started and that is testament to the excellent programme and supportive Trust staff.
What do you think is the best thing about the BCCET SCITT?
Getting the opportunity to take lessons and building relationship with the pupils. Having worked in school in different a role it has been helpful as pupils feel comfortable with me. I have then been able to assert myself in my new role as a teacher.
What are your career aspirations?
When I complete the SCITT I would like to get an Early Career Teaching post, hopefully within the Trust. Then ultimately have a long and rewarding teaching career. I have found talking to my teaching colleagues at St. Bede’s has really inspired me they have had long rewarding careers.
