Shopworker pushed to the floor by beer thief at Sunderland 24-hour petrol station

A man has been charged with a series of offences after a police were initially called to reports of theft from a 24-hour Sunderland petrol station in the early hours of today.

Northumbria Police officers were called to the Morrisons Daily store off the A690 in the Barnes area of the city following a call this morning, Tuesday, March 9.

The force has since confirmed a man has been charged in relation to the incident at the shop.

The incident is not related to ram raids which also happened in Sunderland on Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson said: “Shortly after 3am today we received a report of a theft at a petrol station garage on Durham Road, Sunderland.

“It was reported that a man entered the shop and stole a crate of beer.

"When confronted by a female shopworker, the man then pushed her before causing damage to the door.

“A 24-year-old man was arrested and has since been charged with theft, criminal damage and common assault.

"He is due to appear before magistrates in South Tyneside next month.”
