It’s a mix of sporting stars young and old, and those who made a big impression on those around them.
The common denominator is they all hit the headlines in 1987.
So why not have a glance and see if you remember these stories.
1. Jimmy Lucas
High Barnes runner Jimmy Lucas was proof of life in the fast lane at 70.
He had been actively involved in athletics since the 1930s and was still going strong in 1987. he had the motto 'there's life in the old legs yet'.
And when he was interviewed by the Sunderland Echo in 1987, he told us: "I get a great kick out of it and I really enjoy taking part." Photo: SE
2. Dora Curry
It was lollipops all round - all 300 of them - when Dora Curry retired from her teaching job.
She had spent 34 years at Silksworth Infants School and said goodbye by giving every pupil a lolly. Photo: SE
3. Isabel Smaith
Teacher Isabel Snaith may have been calling it a day after 20 years at Ryhope Infants School but she did it with the love of a generation of children.
She started teaching in 1951 at Dawdon Infants School, then switched to Ryhope CofE School, and finally moved to Ryhope Infants.
Her adoring pupils presented her with flowers and she also got pearls, a quilt and a piece of crystal. Photo: SE
4. John Kay
He would go on to become a Sunderland legend but here's the day John Kay started his Wearside adventure. He eventually made 199 appearances for the Black Cats and earned the nickname of The Tractor.
But one image will always stay in the memories of Sunderland fans. He broke his leg during his final game for Sunderland in 1993 and sat up on the stretcher as he was carried off - and then pretended to be rowing the stretcher off the pitch! Photo: SE
