The May day when Sunderland shoppers in The Bridges were treated to a live performance by a rock star

Live music from a legend and these Sunderland people were first to hear it

It’s not often that you head out for a spot of shopping and come face to face with a music legend.

But it happened on this week in 1990 when Dave Stewart mixed with locals in The Bridges in Sunderland.

And today, we are asking if you were one of the people speaking to the Eurythmics star as he returned to his birthplace.

Dave surprised Sunderland shoppers by performing songs from his new album in the town's Market Square.

We have 3 photos of that special day and perhaps you are in the picture.

Maybe you were the toddler in arms in this photo or one of the school students in the background.

Perhaps you were the person holding a bunch of flowers in another of the photos, or one of the people on the balcony in the background.

We would love to hear from anyone who was there at the time and you can contact us by emailing [email protected]

The singer, songwriter, musician and producer has sold more than 100 million albums and still remains fiercely passionate about his home city and has made many returns.

During one, in 2023, he made sure to include Sunderland on his new tour, which was to be the only date in the UK outside of London.

He headed home to perform his Eurythmics Songbook tour celebrating 40 years since the release of the timeless Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This).

But we want to hear from the people who got an exclusive performance of his new music in 1990. Email [email protected] to tell us more.
