Tree thieves, barrels full of tar and a rubbish chute going up in flames - Sunderland has seen it all on Fireworks Night.
You would not believe the variety of incidents which have occurred on Wearside on November 5 in years gone by.
In the 1880s, a Whitburn tradition of burning tar in barrels landed villagers in trouble in the police.
It was just as bad in 1950 when whole trees were going missing at Humbledon Hill as kids chopped them down for their bonfires.
Then there’s the year when a Sunderland hotel had banger broth and burning beef on the menu.
If that’s got you intrigued, find out more by having a browse through our photo memories.

5. The missing trees of Humbledon
Building a bonfire got another set of youths into trouble, this time on Humbledon Hill. Police were called after reports of several trees missing and two hacked half way down in 1950. When an officer arrived, he found five lads aged 9 to 15 trying to drag a tree trunk. Their parents were fined £10 each. | Google Maps

6. On fire at Covent Garden Garth
The tradition of building a bonfire was kept up at Covent Garden Garth in 1957. But the fire brigade had to be called when the bonfire was found to be too close to a communal refuse chute and the heat set fire to the rubbish inside it. | se
