UK weather forecast: Snow and ice weather warnings in place in aftermath of Storm Ciara hit

Storm Ciara has hit the UK with wet and windy weather conditions over the past few days, with Met Office weather warnings still in place as further wintry conditions are forecast.

The Met Office UK forecast for today, explains “Most areas seeing sunny spells but also blustery showers. Showers heaviest and most frequent in the north and west, with snow over hills, temporary blizzard conditions across the highest routes. Some rain or sleet may cross southern areas. Cold, windy.”

The Met Office tweeted, that “Whilst #StormCiara is clearing away, it will remain unsettled with further strong winds, heavy showers, some snow and ice.”

The weather forecaster then tweeted “Sunday was an extreme #weather day across the UK due to the passage of #StormCiara. The strongest wind gust recorded at 97mph at Needles Battery on the Isle of Wight.”

'Blizzard conditions'

A yellow Met Office weather warning is in place from 12am on Monday (10 Feb) until 23.59pm on Tuesday (11 Feb), covering Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, Northern Ireland, South West Scotland, Lothian Borders, and Strathclyde .

The Met Office said: “Frequent and heavy snow showers will affect the region throughout Monday and Tuesday.

“Strong winds, gusting 50-60 mph, will lead to blizzard conditions at times and considerable drifting of lying snow over high ground. Icy surfaces are likely to occur, more especially on Monday night into Tuesday morning.”

A second snow and ice yellow weather warning is in place from 3pm on Monday (10 Feb) until 23.59pm on Tuesday (11 Feb), covering East Midlands, North East England, North West England, West Midlands, Yorkshire & Humber.

The Met Office said: “Heavy snow showers and icy surfaces are likely to lead to travel disruption, particularly over higher routes.”

Wednesday (12 Feb) has a yellow weather warning from snow and ice in place from 12am to 12pm, covering East Midlands, North East England, North West England, Northern Ireland, West Midlands, Yorkshire & Humber.

The Met Office said: “Further snow showers are likely on Wednesday morning. These are likely to lead to further accumulations of a few cm of snow over ground above around 150 metres.

“Any snow accumulations over lower ground are likely to be temporary. Icy surfaces will be an additional hazard.”

There's also a second yellow weather warning in place for snow and ice in place for Scotland on Wednesday (12 Feb), covering Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, Orkney & Shetland, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders and Strathclyde.

The Met Office said: "Further snow showers are likely across western Scotland on Wednesday morning."
