The Duchess of Sussex, alongside her husband Prince Harry, urged US residents to register to vote in the upcoming presidential election, describing the November event as “the most important election of our lifetime.”

What did Meghan Markle say?

In a recent video clip for Time Magazine, both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex appeared to endorse Trump’s political rival, Joe Biden.

While neither Harry nor Meghan mentioned Mr Biden by name, many viewers have interpreted their comments as being critical of the current President, regarding it instead as an endorsement of his opponent.

In the video, Harry said, “It's time to not only reflect, but act. This election I'm not going to be able to vote here in the US, but many of you may not know that I haven't been able to vote in the UK my entire life.

“As we approach this November, it's vital that we reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity."

Former Suits star Markle went on to add, “'Every four years, we're told the same thing: 'This is the most important election of our lifetime’. But this one is.

“When we vote, our values are put into action, and our voices are heard. Your voice is a reminder that you matter. Because you do and you deserve to be heard."

The Royal Family traditionally does not vote in UK elections in order to show neutrality. Buckingham Palace has distanced itself from Harry’s remarks, stating that “the Duke is not a working member of the royal family and any comments he makes are made in a personal capacity.”

The royal couple recently left the UK to start a new life in California, abandoning their royal duties to make the move to North America. The change came after the pair claimed they had endured significant intrusion and racist attitudes from the British media.

How did Trump respond?

President Trump took a swipe at Markle in response to the video encouraging Americans to vote.

Speaking to reporters during an evening White House press briefing on Wednesday 23 September, Mr Trump said, “I’m not a fan of hers. I would say this - and she has probably heard that - I wish a lot of luck to Harry because he’s going to need it.”

President Trump also took aim at Prince Harry earlier this year, writing in a tweet that he would not receive taxpayer-funded security in the US after abandoning his royal duties.

The President wrote, "I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen and the United Kingdom.

"It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada.

“Now they have left Canada for the U.S. however, the US will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!"
