Thank you - and you should be very proud of yourselves.

That was the message to dozens of people who gave their time to support some of Sunderland’s biggest-ever events.

Official praise has been given to the 100 volunteers who helped at huge occasions such as the Wearside leg of The Tall Ships Races.

The Mayor of Sunderland, Coun Lynda Scanlan, welcomed ‘event makers’ from across the city into the Council Chamber to share their memories and experiences.

She said: “I consider myself very fortunate to have been Mayor of this fantastic city at a time when we hosted some of the biggest events in Europe.

“It’s been refreshing to experience the well-deserved positivity generated by our events this year, and planning is already well underway for the ones to come in 2019.

All these events and activities were only possible with their help - they should all feel very proud to have played their part in them.

“Working with council colleagues, the event makers have supported everything from Active Sunderland BIG events, weekly walking and sporting festivals to Penshaw Bowl, Sunderland Airshow and, of course ,The Tall Ships Races 2018.”

Around 1.2million people visited the Tall Ships Races during the Sunderland leg, and that was just one of the events at which volunteers made such a huge difference.

Coun Scanlan added: “I think we can all agree that all these events and activities were only possible with their help, they should all feel very proud to have played their part in them.”

Victoria French, Sunderland City Council’s head of events, also praised the volunteers: “It is fantastic to see the support for events in Sunderland.

“Whether large or small, many of them simply couldn’t happen if it wasn’t for the dedication and hard work of the many event makers and volunteer groups.

“I hope they will look back with fond memories, new friends and a sense of pride in all that they’ve achieved.

“I also hope many are feeling inspired to volunteer at future events such as the upcoming Sunderland Illuminations and Festival of Light.”
