Young dancers set to get their wings in Swan Lake at Sunderland Empire

Two young dancers are hoping to get their wings as they take to the stage in a professional production of one of the greatest ballets of all time.

Following auditions held by English Youth Ballet at Sunderland Empire, Matilda Maddison, ten, and Madeline Davison, 11, were chosen to dance the roles of the cygnets in Swan Lake.

Ahead of this weekend’s show, the girls have been coached by Spanish principal ballerina – Monica Tapiador – who will be dancing the two leading roles of Odette and Odile.

Matilda, who lives in High Barnes and attends St Mary’s RC Primary School said: “Rehearsals are going really well. The teachers encourage us loads and they always make sure that we are hydrated and happy.”

Speaking about the importance of dancing in her life, she said: “I think it’s very important because when I am at home I find myself dancing when I have nothing to

do.  Ballet is the most important thing for me.  You can show what you are feeling inside when you dance.”

St Joseph’s RC Primary School pupil Madeline, from Biddick Woods said: “I felt overjoyed when I heard I’d been offered a place and I also felt relieved.

“I love the ballet Swan Lake and I think it will be amazing to be in it.”

•Swan Lake, which features eight professional principals and 100 local dancers, aged eight to 18, is at Sunderland Empire on Friday, June 16 at 7.30pm and Saturday, June 17 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm.
