The Black Cats picked up their first clean sheet in 17 games on Saturday and both Kaboul and Kone looked to have developed a solid partnership at the heart of the Sunderland defence.

And Kaboul was full of praise for his defensive parter.

"He is strong, quick and it is a pleasure to play in this team so hopefully we can be rewarded at the end of the season," said Kaboul.

"We need to carry this way because we have been playing very well and the next game is home."

Despite Kaboul enjoying life with Sunderland, his first season on Wearside has been halted by injury albeit the defender admits you have to pull through it.

"I've been unlucky with some some injuries but as a professional you have to keep going because it is part of the sport, so I'm working hard in training and in the gym to be ready for the games."

Sam Allardyce has also been impressed with Kone since his £5million arrival from Lorient.

"His [Kone's[ consistent level of performance has been miraculous considering he only joined us in January.

"He looks like he's played in the Premier League all his career.

"That's the good thing for us.

"At the moment it looks like John and Younes are fighting for the one place, unless we go to a back three."
