Women's rugby game in Sunderland abandoned after player suffers neck injury

A women's rugby game on Wearside had to be abandoned after a player suffered a serious neck injury.

The Sunderland Flames player was hurt in a collision during the second half of her side’s game against Birkenhead Park on Sunday at Ashbrooke Sports Club.

She was taken to the city’s Royal Hospital where she was later discharged from.

Chairman of Sunderland RFC Paul Geehan said the player has a fracture to her vertebrae and is not expected to play again this season.

Both sides agreed to record the match result as a 5-5 draw.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 3.05pm on Sunday to Ashbrooke Sports Club in Sunderland.

“A paramedic was on the scene by 3.40pm and an ambulance arrived at 4.13pm to take the patient to hospital.”
