Woman rescued from river near Wearmouth Bridge and taken to hospital

A woman was taken to hospital after being pulled from the River Wear by teams from the emergency services last night.

Emergency services were called to the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland at around 9.20pm on Friday, June 12 to reports of a person in the water.

A woman was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital after she is thought to have entered the water from the river bank.

The extent of her injuries is not known.

Teams from Sunderland Coastguard and the RNLI attended the scene, where they provided emergency care.

A spokesperson said that the women was pulled from the water before they arrived, by officers from Northumbria Police.

North East Ambulance Service sent one ambulance and two heart teams to scene.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 9.20pm to reports of a person in the water at the Wearmouth Bridge. We sent one ambulance and two heart teams to the scene.

“One female patient was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital.”

A statement from Sunderland Coastguard confirmed that they were called out at 9.22pm.

It said: “Coastguard officers were called out this evening along with RNLI - Sunderland Lifeboat Station to a person in the water under the Wearmouth Bridge.

"On arrival the casualty, who had entered the water from the river bank, had been rescued by police officers from Northumbria Police, we assisted in casualty care before they were handed over to the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust."
