Woman escapes kitchen blaze in Sunderland

A woman escaped a flat in Sunderland tonight after a kitchen blaze.

A fire broke out at an address used as sheltered accommodation in Chester Terrace.

Fire crews attended to extinguish the blaze, with the occupant having got out before they got there.

A spokesman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 17:56, fire crews were called to an address in Chester Terrace, Sunderland.

"This was a two-storey building used as sheltered accommodation.

"The fire was in a second floor flat confined to the kitchen.

"The occupant was self rescued prior to the arrival of the fire and rescue service.

"She was treated by paramedics at the scene for light smoke inhalation but did not require hospital treatment."
