The annual Whitburn Village Festival Picnic on the Green was blessed with sunshine for the fifth year in a row, seeing many local families enjoy a feast as they listened and danced to Cats Night Out playing a selection of 1960s/70s hits and some modern classics. Children had fun on the free bouncy castle and the event was declared, yet again, an event not to be missed. The next organised festival event will be Whitburn's Got Talent on Wednesday, June 22, at 6pm in the parish church hall, Sandy Chare. Children from Whitburn and Marsden Primary Schools will entertain in various ways, aiming to be the 2016 over-all winner All are welcome to attend.

South Bents Townswomen’s Guild meets tomorrow in Whitburn Methodist Church hall. The committee will meet at 6.30pm prior to Craft Class at 7pm. During the day, Sunderland Federation Bowls Day takes place at Sunderland Bowling Alley from 11am to 1pm. Next Wednesday, June 22, South Bents ladies will gather for an outing to Guisborough and Whitby.

Whitburn Local History Group will meet on Friday in the Barnes Institute from 2pm to 3.30pm. Stephanie Yearnshire will talk about Mary Ann Cotton. Admission is £2 and visitors are welcome.

Souter Lighthouse, the gift shop and tea room are open daily from 11am to 5pm. This Saturday and Sunday there will be Kites over Souter from 10am to 5pm. Kites of all shapes and sizes will fill the air above the Lighthouse and Leas plus lots of hands-on activities available to keep the whole family entertained. Some activities may attract a small charge. Booking is not necessary. On Monday, from 11am to 4pm, join Orca Shore Watch and learn about dolphins and porpoises. Everyone is welcome, no experience is needed and this is a great opportunity to learn more about these fascinating sea mammals and how to spot them. Admission charges to the lighthouse apply and booking is essential on [email protected] or call 293 6202. Everyone is welcome, children accompanied by an adult but not dogs. Following an identification workshop will be a chance to observe from the shore and help gather invaluable data to aid conservation. There will be further opportunities to take part in Orca activity in July, August and September. Tanz Academy of Dance holds performing arts classes incorporating all styles of dance with musical theatre and drama on Saturdays at 10am in the Barnes Institute. Children of all ages are welcome.
