South Bents Townswomen's Guild will support the Sunderland Federation coffee morning tomorrow at 10am in St Mary's Church hall. Next Wednesday, November 9, Janet Hylton will talk about Old Sunderland Orphanage at the meeting in the Methodist Church hall at 7pm.

Whitburn Ladies’ Lifeboat Guild will be holding a coffee morning in the cricket club on Wednesday, November 9, from 10.30am to noon. Admission is £2, including refreshments. Stalls will include cakes, official souvenirs and a raffle.

The Word, the new National Centre for the Written Word in South Shields is now open with a full range of exhibitions, showcases, displays and presentations as well as interactive story-telling/drama sessions for children. Whitburn Parish Church 100 Club winners for October are: E Glenwright, A N Other and A Phillips. This year’s gift day in aid of the church raised £1,534 and grateful thanks go to all who held events and donated towards this magnificent sum.

Contributions to South Tyneside Foodbank can be left in the parish church or at the Barnes Institute. Always welcome are teabags, pasta, tinned vegetables, baked beans, instant potato, pasta, ready sauces and other non-perishable packed foods. If you would like donated food to be collected from your home, please contact Carol Shield on the details at the top of this column. The Foodbank is also requesting up to date books and these, too can be collected or left at the Church and Barnes Institute.

Coffee mornings take place every Saturday morning in Whitburn Methodist Church hall and Churches Together Lunch Club is on Thursdays from noon to 1.30pm. Soup, sandwiches, salad, sweet, unlimited tea or coffee and stimulating conversation are available for £3 and all are welcome.
