South Bents Townswomen's Guild meets tomorrow in Whitburn Methodist Church hall at 7pm for Social Studies with a pie and peas supper. Next Wednesday, November 30, is the fifth of the month and therefore there will be no meeting. Friends of Whitburn Church of England Academy will hold its Christmas fair on Thursday from 5pm to 7pm. Tables cost £10 plus a donation to the raffle. Contact the Business office on 529 3712.

Whitburn Ladies’ Lifeboat Guild held a coffee morning in the cricket club which raised more than £492 including the sale of Lifeboat souvenirs. Despite atrocious weather, supporters were extremely generous and grateful thanks go to all those who spent their money and to the many helpers who make events like this possible.

Souter Lighthouse, the gift shop and tea room are open daily from 11am to 5pm until Sunday. This Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm, youngsters can create a Christmas jumper with festive chic for themselves or as a gift. It will cost £3 per jumper and take up to 45 minutes to complete each one. Timed slots are allocated on booking, which is essential by email: [email protected] or call 529 0909.

The Word, the new National Centre for the Written Word in South Shields, is hosting a number of seasonal creative activities including a variety of ways to create your own Christmas cards. Go online at http://theworduk.org/whats-on/ for full details of activities, opening times and charges.

Contributions to South Tyneside Foodbank can be left in the parish church or at the Barnes Institute. Always welcome are teabags, pasta, tinned vegetables, baked beans, instant potato, pasta, ready sauces and other non-perishable packed foods. If you would like donated food to be collected from your home, contact Carol Shield, details at the top of this column. The Foodbank is also requesting items of clothing eg scarves, gloves, winter hats etc and these too, can be collected or left at the church and Barnes Institute.

The Barnes Institute is available for hire for one-off events such as children’s parties and can accommodate a bouncy castle. Contact Carol Shield on 07767 156 134 for more information. The Whitburn Winter Festival will be in the Barnes Institute on Saturday, December 3, from 11am to 3pm. Look out for full details around the village. Tickets for the draw with prizes including a luxury food hamper, luxury wine and spirits hamper, £50 cash, stunt scooter, personal DVD player and many more are available now, £1 each. All proceeds are in aid of Whitburn Festivals and the upkeep and maintenance of the Barnes Institute.
