South Bents Townswomen's Guild does not meet tomorrow as it is the fifth Wednesday of the month. On Saturday, Sunderland Federation Carol Service will be held in Humbledon Methodist Church at 2pm. Next Wednesday, December 7, South Bents ladies will support the Federation Coffee Morning in St Mary's Church hall, Bridge Street, at 10am.

Latimers annual Carol Concert with Whitburn Parish Church Choir takes place on Thursday. Tickets priced £15 including a light supper are available from the café. The café is now licensed and drinks can be purchased on the night.

Don’t miss the annual Camel Parade in South Shields on Friday from 5pm to 6.30pm. Line the route along Ocean Road to the seafront for the perfect spot to see the camels, who will be followed by a number of street entertainers including stilt walkers all dressed in fabulous festive costume and a giant illuminated dragon on wheels. Spark! Drummers will perform a unique combination of beautiful lighting and dynamic choreography with plenty more fun and entertainment at the seafront before the evening ends with a fabulous fireworks display after the camels have left.

Whitburn Winter Festival will be in the Barnes Institute on Saturday from 11am to 3pm. Admission is £1 for everyone with adults receiving a free glass of mulled wine or hot drink and free upstairs activities for children including Santa Claus in his Grotto with a gift, tricks and activities from Magic Mike and face painting. Downstairs there will be stalls, lucky dip, table games, festive refreshments and tickets on sale for the Grand Winter Festival Draw at 2.30pm. Prizes include a luxury food hamper, luxury wine and spirits hamper, £50 cash, stunt scooter, personal DVD player and many more donated by local residents and businesses. All proceeds are in aid of Whitburn Festivals and the upkeep and maintenance of the Barnes Institute.

Souter Lighthouse, the gift shop and tea room are open at weekends. This Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6.30pm and the next two weekends, youngsters up to the age of 10 can enjoy a magical festive experience. Arrive at Souter, post your letter to Father Christmas and embark on a walk and story with Mrs Christmas. Find Father Christmas’s hut hidden away in a quiet corner of the wildlife garden and spend some time chatting with the big man himself. Then it’s off to create some woodland crafts and warm up with hot chocolate and marshmallows. Whitburn Parish Church 100 Club winners for November are J Ward, B Etherington and J Moore. The December prizes will be double the usual amount.

The Word, the new National Centre for the Written Word in South Shields, is open daily with a full range of exhibitions, showcases, displays and presentations.
