South Bents Townswomen's Guild will support the Sunderland Federation Coffee Morning tomorrow in St Mary's Church hall, Bridge Street, at 10am. On Wednesday, December 14, 34 members and friends of South Bents TG will attend Christmas Luncheon with entertainment at Little Haven Hotel, South Shields. This will conclude the meeting schedule for 2016.

Whitburn Bowling Club held its presentation night recently in the Jack Clark Park when trophies were presented to club members. Robert Craggs won the Club Championship and Veterans’ Championship, with Frank Smith runner-up in both. Geoff Vayle won the James McGilvary Rose Bowl and also the Vic Stanger Trophy. Keith Taylor was the winner of the Vice-President’s Trophy and Brian Hastings won the Alan Smith Trophy. The Enayl Trophy was won by Peter Shaw. Whitburn Men’s team won the Earle Cup division three Sunderland League and also the Hylton Shield division two South Tyneside League. Whitburn Ladies had a successful season too, as runners-up in the Sunderland Ladies League and three members, Brenda Harper, Muriel Felce and Maureen Smith, won the Marjorie Marshall, the first time a Whitburn team has won this. Florence Rodenby was ladies’ Club Champion and Sheila Happer runner-up. Brenda Harper won the Audrey Keerie and South Tyneside Cups and Ann Raine was runner-up in both. All players are looking forward to next season.

Christmas services on Christmas Eve at Whitburn Parish Church start with a Crib Service for all the family at 3pm. Go dressed as a nativity character and join in the story of the first Christmas. At 7pm there will be a traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols and a midnight service of Holy Communion at 11.45pm. On Christmas Day, a family service of Holy Communion will be at 10am.

Souter Lighthouse, the gift shop and tea room, are open at weekends. This Saturday and Sunday from noon to 6.30pm and next weekend, December 17 and 18, youngsters up to the age of 10 can enjoy a magical festive experience. Arrive at Souter, post your letter to Father Christmas and embark on a walk and story with Mrs Christmas. Find Father Christmas’s hut hidden away in a quiet corner of the wildlife garden and spend some time chatting with the big man himself. Then it’s off to create some woodland crafts and warm up with hot chocolate and marshmallows. The Word, the new National Centre for the Written Word in South Shields, is open daily with a full range of exhibitions, showcases, displays and presentations.
